Emergency Contacts
First: Stay Calm
No one in recorded medical literature has died from cannabis alone. Consuming too much cannabis can feel frightening and deeply uncomfortable, but it is not fatal by itself. The most important thing is to create a safe, calm environment.
- Stop consuming immediately.
- Find a safe, comfortable place to rest — lying down if necessary.
- If possible, have a trusted person stay with you.
- Drink water or a non-caffeinated beverage.
- Remind yourself: this will pass. Effects are temporary.
What You Might Experience
Common experiences when too much has been consumed: rapid heartbeat, heightened anxiety or paranoia, nausea, disorientation, difficulty with coordination, intense sedation. These are uncomfortable but typically not medically dangerous for a healthy adult.
Maryland Poison Center
The Maryland Poison Center (1-800-222-1222) is staffed 24/7 by pharmacists and nurses. They can provide guidance on cannabis-related concerns over the phone at no charge. They are not law enforcement and the call is confidential.
If a Pet Has Been Exposed
Dogs and cats are significantly more sensitive to THC than humans. If a pet has consumed cannabis (including edibles), contact your veterinarian immediately or call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435. Keep all cannabis products, especially edibles, in child- and pet-resistant storage out of reach.
Mental Health Support
If you are experiencing persistent anxiety, distressing thoughts, or a mental health crisis, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 by calling or texting 988. It is free, confidential, and available in English and Spanish.
