What Makes a Concentrate "Solventless"?
Cannabis concentrates can be made in two broad ways: with chemical solvents (such as butane or CO₂ that are later purged from the product), or without any solvents at all — using only mechanical force, heat, pressure, ice water, or gravity to separate the resin glands () from the plant material.
Solventless concentrates are produced using the second approach. No chemical solvents are introduced at any stage. This is appealing to some consumers who want to avoid any risk of residual solvent exposure — though all regulated concentrate products sold in Maryland must pass independent lab testing regardless of production method.
Kief
Kief is the simplest solventless concentrate and the easiest to encounter accidentally — it is the fine powder that accumulates at the bottom of a grinder after processing dried flower. Kief consists primarily of separated trichomes: the resin-dense glands that carry most of the cannabinoids and terpenes.
Potency: Typically 25–60% THC by weight — considerably higher than the flower it came from.
How it is used: Kief is most commonly sprinkled into a bowl, on top of flower in a joint or pre-roll, or pressed into hash. It can also be used in a dab rig or concentrate vaporizer.
What it looks like: A fine, powdery, light-golden or greenish powder. Higher purity kief (from finer screens) tends to be lighter in color.
Traditional Hash
Hash — also called dry-sieve hash or pressed hash — is made by collecting kief through a series of fine mesh screens, then compressing it (sometimes with heat and pressure from hands or tools) into a solid block, ball, or slab.
Hash is one of the oldest forms of cannabis concentrate, with centuries of production history in Central Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East. Modern hash production uses more controlled screening methods for consistency and cleanliness.
Potency: Typically 30–60% THC, depending on the starting material quality and screen sizes used.
How it is used: Hash can be smoked (often crumbled and mixed with flower), vaporized, or used in a dab rig.
Bubble Hash (Ice Water Hash)
Bubble hash is made by agitating cannabis in ice-cold water with fine mesh "bubble bags." The cold water causes trichomes to become brittle and separate from the plant material. The water-trichome mixture is then filtered through progressively finer mesh bags, and the resulting paste is dried.
Bubble hash is graded by the mesh size (micron rating) of the bag that caught it — finer micron ratings (like 73µm or 90µm) tend to catch the highest-quality trichome heads with fewer impurities, while coarser catches include more plant material. Labels or budtenders may reference "full-melt" bubble hash: a very pure grade that vaporizes completely without leaving residue.
Potency: Typically 40–70% THC; full-melt grades can exceed 70%.
How it is used: Dabbed, vaporized, or pressed further into rosin.
Rosin
is produced by placing cannabis material — flower, kief, or bubble hash — between heated metal plates and applying controlled pressure. The heat and pressure cause the trichome resin to flow out of the plant material and be collected as a pure concentrate.
Rosin made from bubble hash as the starting material produces what is called hash rosin — generally considered a premium product because the starting material is already a concentrated trichome collection.

Potency: Typically 50–85% THC.
Consistency: Rosin can be soft and sap-like when warm, or firm and waxy when cool. Cold-cure and whipped processing methods produce a range of consistencies including badder, jam, and pressed sheets.
How it is used: Dabbed in a rig or e-nail, or used in a concentrate-compatible vaporizer.
