Maryland Cannabis Purchase Limits & ID Requirements

What you can buy per visit, what ID you need, and what to know at the register.

5 min readReviewed by SOL Education Team

ID Requirements

Every customer — regardless of program — must present a valid, government-issued photo ID at the door and again at the point of sale. Maryland law requires two-point ID verification for every transaction, with no exceptions.

Accepted Forms of ID

The following government-issued photo IDs are accepted in Maryland dispensaries:

  • State-issued driver's license (any U.S. state)
  • State-issued non-driver identification card
  • U.S. passport or U.S. passport card
  • U.S. military identification card
  • Permanent resident card (green card)

Expired IDs are not accepted. Digital copies of IDs displayed on a phone are not accepted in place of a physical document. If your ID is expired or unavailable, you will not be able to complete a purchase.

Purchase Limits — Adult Use

Adult-use customers (21+) may purchase up to certain amounts in a single transaction, as set by the Maryland Cannabis Administration. The figures below reflect MCA documentation as of mid-2025 and should be confirmed with SOL staff at your visit — the MCA can update limits by regulation, and your budtender will have the current authoritative figures.

Maryland Adult-Use Purchase Limits (approximate, per transaction — confirm with SOL staff)
Product TypeApproximate Limit per Transaction
Usable cannabis (flower)~1.5 oz (~42.5 g)
Cannabis concentrate~12 g
Cannabis-infused products (edibles, tinctures, etc.)~750 mg THC total
Combination of product typesEquivalence calculated by dispensary per current MCA rules

These limits are per transaction, not per day. Purchasing multiple transactions to circumvent per-transaction limits is prohibited. Confirm the current limits with SOL staff before your visit if this affects your purchasing plan.

Purchase Limits — Medical Patients

Registered medical cannabis patients in Maryland operate under a separate, generally higher, purchase limit structure set by the Maryland Cannabis Administration. The exact limits depend on your certification and may differ from adult-use limits.

To access medical purchase limits, you must present both your valid photo ID and your Maryland Cannabis Administration patient credential at check-in. Staff will verify your registration and apply the appropriate limits at the register.

If you are a medical patient and unsure of your current limits, ask a SOL staff member — they can look up your account details at the register.

What Happens at the Register

After your consultation with a budtender, you will proceed to checkout. The register team will:

  1. Verify your ID a second time
  2. Confirm your product selections against your purchase limit
  3. Process payment — ask staff about accepted payment methods, as options vary
  4. Package your purchase in labeled, child-resistant containers as required by law

Maryland law requires that cannabis leave the dispensary in sealed, labeled, child-resistant packaging. Do not open packaging in the parking lot or on dispensary property — cannabis consumption is not permitted on dispensary premises.

Caregiver Purchases

Registered caregivers may purchase cannabis on behalf of patients they are registered to assist. Caregivers must present their own valid photo ID and their Maryland Cannabis Administration caregiver credential. Caregiver purchase limits follow the same medical patient framework for the patients they serve.

Payment

Many Maryland cannabis dispensaries operate primarily on a cash basis due to federal banking restrictions on cannabis businesses. SOL Cannabis offers payment options that may include cash, debit (via ATM-style processing), or other available solutions. Ask staff at your visit for current payment options, as these can change.

transactions may carry a small fee. There is typically an ATM on-site if you prefer cash.
